Saint Joseph Church – 2024 Architectural Award-Winner

Congratulations to ONG&ONG and LPA for winning the 2024 URA Architectural Heritage Award. Saint Joseph Church alongside several other remarkable sites and structures has been honored with this recognition.

The Architectural Heritage Awards (AHA) was established in 1995 to recognise well-restored monuments and conserved buildings in Singapore, and the people behind them. Besides honouring best practices in technical restoration, AHA also spotlights projects that sustain and strengthen the intangible values of heritage buildings for the community.

The journey began in 2017 when the church was in urgent need of restoration since it’s inception in 1912. The extensive five-year project to revive its historic grandeur was entrusted to the renowned architectural firm ONG&ONG.

In 2021, we were proud to contribute to this remarkable restoration by illuminating the church façade with our SR® Contour V Slim. This ultra-slim, high-brightness product is designed for exceptional performance in outdoor and tropical environments.

The church showcases its Manueline grandeur through intricate carved ornamentation, exquisite tilework, and vibrant stained glass. According to LPA Singapore, a notable lighting consultancy, the lighting design accentuates the timeless character of the building as both a place of worship and a heritage gem, with carefully balanced brightness and contrast. For the church’s interior, LPA Singapore chose simple linear uplights and spotlights to highlight the series of small altars, statues, and heritage features. The interior lighting is connected to a control system, enabling the creation of various lighting scenes tailored to the church’s operational needs.
