Steeped in history since the 1830s, Amoy Street is where Singapore’s heritage meets the modern era. Lined with beautifully conserved architecture, the street comes alive in vibrant colour, featuring a dynamic mix of restaurants, retail spaces, and creative studios above. The relighting initiative led by the lighting consultant ALPs, focused on upgrading outdated fixtures with our SR® luminaires. ALPs was tasked to work on the overall facade, highlighting the building’s eccentric colours and mural at night, which required careful selection of luminaire type, colour temperature, and placement, ensuring the architecture and artwork can be fully appreciated even after dark.
The original façade lighting lacked precise beam control, as the high-wattage fixtures produce broad and uneven light distribution. This resulted in inconsistent highlights and flattened shadows that diminish the architectural definition of key features such as pilasters and window frames. Additionally, because the windows were controlled by tenants and may be opened or closed unpredictably, the façade often appeared visually inconsistent at night.
To address these challenges, the brilliant lighting concept by ALPs focuses on creating a refined night-time identity that enhances the building’s architectural rhythm while maintaining subtle elegance. The design introduces slim-profile linear luminaires – specifically our SR® Blaze to accentuate vertical façade elements and establish a continuous glowing line along the building crown. This approach produces a softly layered lighting effect that emphasises the building’s heritage character through a modern lighting language. The fixture remains discreet during the day yet deliver expressive illumination after dark. By carefully highlighting vertical elements and architectural reliefs, the lighting restores depth and clarity to the façade.
The mural section of the building was painted by Spanish artist Mark Rios together with four fine arts students from Laselle College of the Arts. To further enhance the mural, our SR® Contour Auras(recently shortlisted for the [d]arc awards 2025 Best Exterior Kit) were used as a framing element, compartmentalising the quote and artwork. Previously a plain wall, the space now features a clear, visually striking highlight that also introduces an interactive dimension. Our contour lights are constructed from a high-performance silicone, delivering exceptional uniform light output with no dark spots and outstanding durability in harsh environments, making them ideal for this kind of application.
The lighting consultant has truly demonstrated how thoughtful design can bring the natural colours of Amoy Street to life even at night. Rather than relying on multiple fixtures, ALPs accentuated different key areas with our SR® luminaires, while ensuring the overall building maintains harmony with the neighbouring shophouses—a celebration of light, colour, and heritage in perfect balance.
