Every home is never just a shell—it’s a living vessel of memories. Within its walls, countless stories unfold: moments cherished, memories created, and generations leaving traces of their time. Though renovations come and go, the soul of the house remains untouched.
In this special residential project, we worked closely with the brilliant lighting consultant ambiguous, that led the lighting design breathing new life into this architectural marvel. The remarkable architecture and landscape were designed by FARM, with elegant interiors by Knots.
The philosophy behind this design celebrates the essence of unity and individuality. The two blocks like yin and yang define and complete one another, complementing the structure’s form and balance, distinct yet in harmony. Outside, the green expanses form the stage for this graceful interplay, where a variety of bushes and plants add depth, texture, and vibrancy. Taller shrubs and small trees provide natural shade, framing open spaces and creating cozy corners for quiet moments. The greenery feels alive, peaceful, and welcoming—perfectly setting the tone as visitors arrive at the entrance.
The lighting journey began when the house owners came to ambiguous with a simple request: make the house feel brighter. Even with numerous fixtures in place, the space still felt subdued. The problem was apparent: light fell primarily on the floor, leaving the walls and timber ceiling in darkness.
Rather than repainting the ceiling white to increase brightness, ambiguous chose to celebrate the natural timber, preserving the warmth and character it brings. The renovation focused on how light interacts with surfaces, transforming the perception of brightness without compromising materials. Subtle lighting was added to shelves and walls where necessary, enhancing the space without increasing the number of ceiling downlights.
Their key approach was guided by three key principles:
1. Minimize glare to create a comfortable visual experience.
2. Highlight all visible surfaces, including walls and ceilings, to redefine spatial brightness.
3. Standardize color temperature at 2700K, accentuating the texture and warmth of the timber.
Our SR® Eflex is installed within the ceiling cove lighting, delivering a soft glow illumination and no harsh glare—ideal for precise light control. It can be easily cut on-site without soldering, and its latest plug-and-play accessories ensure efficient installation.
On the staircase handrail, SR® Fino was used to illuminate the steps, ensuring clear visibility. Featuring a 10 mm ultra-slim profile, it perfectly complements the minimalist aesthetic of this sophisticated residence and integrates seamlessly into the overall architectural design. Additionally, Fino’s 4 cm ultra-small bending radius allows for easy adaptation to curved surfaces throughout the house and supports intricate design applications.
As stated by ambiguous: Rather than adding more ceiling downlights, illumination was thoughtfully introduced to shelves and wall surfaces only where it was required. Through careful control of light placement and quality, the space now reads as calm and harmonious, softly lit to enhance the natural warmth and tranquil character of the home. We are proud that our SR® luminaires were used to illuminate this beautiful residence, enriching materiality, to create a calm, welcoming atmosphere—fulfilling ambiguous’s lighting design vision.
